The Providence Center
Historically, the building facility had been through several alterations. It had long been used as a screw factories since the 19th century. After the screw company left Providence in 1950s, the building was divided for the needs of various tenants, and the mill complex gradually fell into disrepair. Up until the 70s,  Rhode Island Group Health Association (RIGHA) took over the hundred year old structure and had it renovated to fulfill the modern needs. The general restoration set a tone to the usage afterwards, which turned out to be the predecessor of the Providence Center.      After decades of development, the Providence Center has become the largest provider of behavioral health care services in the state of Rhode Island. Facing the predicament of limited resource and available spaces, yet the client body is continuously expanding, the object of this project is to offering the center significant opportunities for improving the Center noticeably for the better, so it can serve its mission more effectively.
There are total 4 floors in the building. There is little public space, waiting area are separate and isolated, and interior spaces are very dark, the existing space makes people and fell very anxious.

There are 5 entrances, 4 staircases and 1 elevator in the building. The main entrance is in 3rd floor. The pathway are very narrow.
What I am trying to do first is cutting the bunding along the main 3rd and 4th floor stair down to the 1st floor, to let in light and reconnect all 4 floors.
Then, I used ribbon walls to create a new stair, reorganize the waiting areas, bring in light, and orient visitors to the building.
The different angle of ribbon is depends on the existing plan. The shift is not only occur on the plan, but also show up the vertical wall. It creates a visual space for people seeing through.

The plan shows how the waiting area around the ribbon wall. The axon shows the new circulation from the 1st floor to 4th floor.
There is a skylight on the above. It take more light in.
